Cocoa and Christmas Lights oh my!

Friday night we had the kids dress up warm and snuggly in their night attire and we headed out. Our first stop was Circle K where we loaded up on some Hot Cocoa!

Then it was off to Midwest City where we indulged in the Midwest City Holiday Lights Spectacular.
We have driven over and enjoyed looking at the lights for the last few years and it is enjoyable with the kids; especially the section that lights up with the music. The kids always enjoy it and so on this night, we decided to go twice through it to get double the pleasure.

It was an enjoyable time with the family and we definitely enjoyed it. Here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

Smurfs

I remember when I was younger the television cartoon series, Smurfs, was very popular.

And as of last night, I watched the animated movie that was made from the cartoon.

And you know what? I thought it was a good movie and had no problems watching it with my kids. It was tastefully done and we enjoyed it. Of course the kids had watched it a few weeks before at the dollar theater and so they were not as 'taken' to it as they were the first time, but we still enjoyed our evening as a family and that is what is important. We were gathered together as a family and spent quality time together. This year it is my desire to slow down and not get too busy and I am going to enjoy it as much as I can.

I watched this series along with several others to entertain my Saturday mornings as a youth and didn't think anything of it. I was a young and impressionable child with parents who loved me and cared for me. They took pride in protecting me and ensuring I was safe from harm and anything questionable.

But apparently the cartoon series was seen in the eyes of many as a bad show and that it promoted witchcraft and sorcerery along with several other questionable innuendos. The fact of the matter is that I never looked at this cartoon as something corrupt or evil. Yes, Gargamel and his cat were evil. Yes, he was from what I gather, a warlock or some kind of wizard. And apparently his cat, who is named Azriel is the same name as one of Satan's 'angels' aka demons. And this seemed to really upset a lot of people and cause quite an uproar in hidden satanic influences. The Smurfs appear to be quite innocent and go about their merry way and try to avoid the evil Gargamel. We shouldn't forget that Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians is a play on the words cruel and devil and is used to describe the 'bad guy' in the movie. And what about 'Lucifer' the cat in Cinderella? he had an evil side to him and the name was placed to give people a reference point as to Lucifer being evil.  It is okay to discern something and make sure it is legitimately safe for your family, but let's not overreact okay?

O' Christmas Tree, O' Christmas Tree

Below are the verses of an Old German chorus that I have always liked, Oh Christmas Tree.
In addition to the song is a picture of our Christmas Tree for 2011 with my 3 beautiful children, Micah, Alexis and Aiden.
The kids are anxiously awaiting for the arrival of Santa and presents.
I really like the last stanza of O Christmas Tree. He is faithful and true to us and
has richly blessed my home and family and for that I am truly blessed.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer's here,
But also when 'tis cold and drear.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!
From base to summit, gay and bright,
There's only splendor for the sight.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy candles shine so brightly!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
And trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!

Shawnee Christmas Parade

Every year the city of Shawnee hosts a Christmas parade on the first Thursday evening of December. Some years it is bitter cold and other times it is mild, but every year there are several floats, dancers, bands, cars, motorcycles, candy and of course Santa Claus riding on the big fire truck at the end of the parade. Families line up along Main Street in anticipation for the evening's events.

The first several years we lived here we never would go because it always seemed we would forget when it would be held and then about the time we thought about it, we had missed it.
For the last several years we have been attending and it is becoming a tradition we enjoy.
We pack a bag full of blankets and hats and gloves and then fill a thermos full of coffee and hot chocolate with extra cups to enjoy a warm beverage during the festivities and if we remember we take along some goodies as well.

This year our parade was held on December 1st and what an appropriate activity to enjoy on the very first day of the Christmas season. The weather had been pretty nice all week and then a cold front blew through in the early evening and the weather dipped into the low 50s to start and would eventually drop well into the 30s later that night, but for the parade it was 50 degrees with hints of colder weather on the way when the wind would blow.

We loaded up our hot chocolate and blankets and put our hats and coats on and went downtown Shawnee to enjoy the parade. Below is a picture of one of the most unique floats from the parade festivities. This will be the first of many Christmas activities for our family this year. Stay tuned for more.

Christmas Time is here

I just adore Christmas time and not because of commercialism, but because of the reason for the season. This is when we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This is a special time for me. I have always loved this time of year. It is a wonderful time to celebrate with family and enjoy the blessings God has given us.

What do I like about this time of year? The weather starts to get cooler, we break out the Christmas decorations, tree and lights, we fix yummy meals, we drink hot chocolate, we go and look at light displays, make awesome crafts with the kids, college football bowl games are on, we spend time with our families and share the love of Christ with each other, we exchange gifts and anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus for our small children and we celebrate Jesus' birth.

I am looking forward to what is to come this month and know it will be here and gone before we know it. I am going to embrace it and enjoy every moment!

The reason for the season is Jesus!

'Tis the season

My how the past few months have already flown by since school started. Alexis a 4th grader, Micah is in pre-K and Aiden turned 2. We celebrated Aiden's birthday on Halloween weekend with family and enjoyed a time of food, fellowship and football; not to mention lot's of treats.

Friday before Halloween was Micah's school "treat" parade. The kid's got dressed up in costume and went from classroom to classroom collecting a good amount of candy and then at the end we enjoyed a slice of pizza and a cold drink. Of course it was just enough to tease our taste buds and we ventured over to Little Caesars for a family meal deal consisting of a pepperoni pizza and bread sticks.

That evening we cleaned up the house and prepared for family to come in the following day.

The next morning we decorated the house and welcomed our out of town family for Aiden's 2nd birthday. What a blessed time. We enjoyed wonderful cake made by Michele in the shape of a curious george face...we watched Oklahoma play Kansas State in football...we visited and watched Aiden open gifts...and we ate some great food fixed by Michele for a late lunch/early dinner.

It was then time to get dressed up again and go out on the town...we ventured over to the Shawnee mall for the annual trick-or-treat and saw lots of great costumes and the kids loaded up on more sweets. It was a great time for the cousins and they enjoyed the time together. When we returned home we got out our pumpkins and began to carve them up. It was quite an enjoyable time to carve pumpkins and fellowship with family...these are the memories I enjoy making..

The next day our family went back home to Kansas and we loaded back up for some more fun at a local Trunk or Treat and won all sorts of prizes and filled our bags again with candy.

Monday night came and the weather was perfect; it was in the upper 60s when we ventured out for some trick-or-treating in the nicer neighborhoods in town. We hit the jackpot for sure and we bagged even more sweets. 4 nights in all for treating and a ton of sweets later the month of November has quickly arrived and has began to escape already.

This week we are preparing for Miss Alexis' 10th birthday party. I cannot believe my baby girl is going to be 10...wow~! We are continuing a family tradition that was started when I turned 10. 10 days before the birthday the child will receive a small gift and finally receiving the biggest one on their actual birthday. I remember how exciting it was to receive a gift every day...and so far Alexis is loving it.

Till next entry, be blessed.
Here is a saying that someone posted on facebook this past week and I thought it is so true.

Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know that I.
Be still and know that.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.
There you will find God.
Not signs and wonders.
Who needs signs..when there is God.
It's a sign and wonder that anyone needs this proof when God is...and all you have to do is BE.

Warrior Dash invades Oklahoma

More than 7,500 warriors converged for battle upon the grounds of Turkey Mountain in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 24th, as Warrior Dash made its inaugural appearance in the Sooner state.
The ever popular extreme event had been previously held in surrounding states within the past year. Once announced, on the Warrior Dash website, that Oklahoma would be hosting the ‘mud-crawling, fire-leaping, extreme run from hell’ thousands of locals and dozens from other states jumped at the opportunity to commit to this intense challenge.

Fall is in the air at Orr Family Farms

Resonating sounds of tractors and barnyard animals harmonizing with random outbursts of children's laughter and hypnotic aromas of sweet kettle corn and freshly cut hay saturating the atmosphere, one would be safe in assuming fall has arrived at the Orr Family Farm. While the farm can be enjoyed by everyone year-round, something magical happens when fall makes its appearance...

Oklahoma City runs on pink

When one hears the term race, it’s often viewed as an event requiring lots of athleticism, mixed with speed and endurance and those who are not in shape need not try. To hear the word cancer, thoughts of suffering, hopelessness and death run rampant through ones’ mind......

Running Over Hurdles

A few weeks before my 36th birthday, I had the opportunity participate in my first Corporate Challenge with the company I work for. As I stood in the infield of the track watching numerous individuals competing in their events, the competitive fire began to burn deep within my core. A sleeping giant was had been awakened from its slumber and was beginning to stir. The giant had been in a longer than expected hibernated sabbatical that made Rip Van-Winkle’s slumber seem like a catnap. There were few, if any remnants visible of the former, collegiate athlete. The once toned physique had become hidden and scared by layers of fat from years of inactivity and stress.

The internal clock that once ticked slowly in my youth had now seemed to be ticking at a less-than-desirable quicker pace. Three summer’s before, I had shed over 30 pounds off my frame through exercise and a more balanced diet and looked more like the runner I once was. Unfortunately, I did not have the motivation or desire to endure in a training program or any kind of physical activity due to the stressful, depressed lifestyle I had unfortunately embraced. Slowly over the next three years, those pounds came back with a personal vendetta against me and any attempt of keeping them away. My nemesis had not only returned to my waistline and frame, but it had returned for battle and this time it had bought in reinforcements.

Through two job losses and other personal drama, the pounds continued to attach themselves to me and refused to play fair. I stepped on the scales the day before my birthday and did not like what I saw. I was well over 255 pounds and had at one time hit 260, a far cry from the days of a starving collegiate athlete who often was considered a heavyweight at a mere 195 pounds. Hampered by nagging IT Band issues over the last 5 years had made a return to competitive running all the less realistic. My mental toughness had succumbed to the pain and excuses. For once in my athletic career I was experiencing a hurdle that I could not jump. My ignorance in research led me to believe there was no true fix for my issue. Instead of spending the time needed to nurse an injury, I committed the unpardonable sin in athletics: I quit. I had decided it would be too much effort to try and train through pain and keep up a rigorous training schedule and would be much more enjoyable to just relax and live life.

With my mother’s diagnosis with cancer a year before and my dad’s diagnosis of adult onset diabetes a few months earlier, I knew it was time to make some changes. I knew that while exercise and a healthier lifestyle was not an insurance policy against sickness, it provided me peace of mind that I was doing something about my situation.  So out onto the streets I ventured that birthday eve with the decision to complete a one-mile run with nothing to lose and everything to gain. As I embarked on my first run in over 3 years my lungs ached and my knees and legs screamed from each time my feet impacted the asphalt. Even through the pain I was experiencing, I felt alive. It was as if each step and breathe I took was instilling life back into soul of this runner and in the end not all hope was lost. My pace had been respectable and the desire to run had been restored.

The next several weeks would definitely be a challenge I was not sure I could handle. Of all the summers I chose to break out of my running sabbatical, I would choose the hottest one on record. As a teenager I could run for what seemed like hours in the hot, grueling Kansas summers. Running and recovery for a cross-country runner is much different than that of an overweight, out-of-shape adult. The body just doesn’t react the same way nor does it recover as quickly. Fortunately, I had enough mental toughness and strength to squeak out a few miles each week before surrendering to the air conditioning and shower.

At the end of June the fitness center at my work announced a Summer Challenge Incentive Program. This challenge was a 6 week program designed to push the participants to improve their overall fitness week over week. It involved doing pushups, curl sit-ups and a 12 minute walk/run. In order to “pass” to the next week, each participant had to improve their initial results by 10% for each week. Several different group classes that ranged from boot camp to elliptical training to free weights were available for those who truly wanted to see results. At the end of the 6 week program, the winner would receive an iPad. The prize was motivation enough to get back into respectable shape and hone my mental toughness. I wanted that iPad and I was going to do everything it took to pass my weekly tests and ultimately finish the challenge.

As of today, I have been training for 13 weeks and have built a core foundation to springboard off of going forward. I successfully completed the challenge aforementioned. At first I did not know if I could finish each weekly test, but through rigorous, daily exercises and training I was able to meet each challenge laid before me. They say you cannot eat an elephant all at once, but must eat it one bite at a time and that is the approach I had to take with this challenge. I quit focusing on the finish line and put my focus on the goal in front of me.

Unfortunately, I did not win the iPad, as there were a total of 7 finalists at the end of the program and the winner was picked from a drawing. It was a bit disheartening to finish and not win the grand prize, but I did not lose. I was still a winner. This challenge program got me back into shape and was the kick in the butt that I needed. My mental toughness has been sharpened and my physical toughness has been tweaked. In the process, my diet has had an overhaul; I have trimmed 3 inches of my waistline and I have shed a total of 20 pounds. I am ready for the challenge(s) that lie in the miles ahead of me and by this time next year, I will be in the best shape of my life at the age of 37. I have decided to embrace a healthier lifestyle and persevere. I will run over the hurdles and go the distance, regardless of how difficult the challenges seem.

Simple Blessings- revised

“I’m going to go to some garage sales this morning, do you want me to take Alexis to school?” my wife inquired causing me to stir from my night’s slumber. “Sure,” I mumbled incoherently back to her as I turned back over in hopes I could steal a few more minutes of sleep before starting my hectic schedule for the day. What I didn’t know was that my 2 year old son, Micah, had just awoken and thus the start of my day was thrust upon me. After getting him something to eat for breakfast and indulging in my second cup of coffee, I decided it was time to knock out some work while he was playing outside and it was still relatively quiet in the living room.

About the time I had become completely engrossed in my work, I heard the back screen door open and Micah’s voice echoed through the kitchen, “Daddy, Daddy, come see what I found!” His intentions were innocent and wanted to capture my attention. Being stubborn and caught up in my work, I replied with a pathetic, “In a minute.” About five minutes later, the door opened again and was followed by the sound of uncoordinated feet hopping across the floor. My peripheral vision immediately caught the silhouette of my son bounding towards me and before I could respond, he was airborne and landed abruptly next to me. Without hesitation he eagerly announced in my left ear “Daddy! Guess what? I found something!” Normally about this time I would’ve become agitated because he was interrupting my work, but something inside told me to just chill.
As I put my laptop down and turned, my son’s piercing blue eyes captivated my attention. Knowing he had my confirmation, he thrust out his tiny hand that was balled in a fist. “What did you find?” I asked. Micah opened his hand and shouted, “A tatterpillar!” He had been terrified of insects for the longest time and to observe a large caterpillar in his hand was impressive. A smile immediately radiated across my face as I flashed back to a time when my father and I spent hours hunting for bugs in our backyard. It was amazing how that memory could still impact me so many years later as an adult.
“Wow buddy that’s really cool! Where’d you find it?” I inquired and without missing a beat, my 2 year old sprung to his feet, grabbed my hand and led me to the pecan tree in the backyard. We spent the next hour together searching for bugs and building a bond. Work could wait; this is one project I didn’t want to miss.
If I were to ever have an epiphany, this experience was mine. The magnitude of this paradigm shift would’ve set off a seismograph. All of the things, of little or no substance, I had ever invested in prior to that day, instantly lost their luster. Moments like this would be etched forever in my son’s mind. I knew that I needed to make an immediate change or face the grim reality that my actions would alter my children’s development and perception of their father.
No college course could’ve ever prepared me for success in the business of my children and how to invest in their futures. The best experience I’ve received to become a successful father, was through those of my childhood and seeing the love and sacrifices my parents made by pouring into me and my siblings. They went out of their way to invest into our lives and ensure that we had a solid foundation to build on. One phrase I’ve heard often and try to live by is “we can’t change the past, but we can change the future by the choices we make today.” There are many instances as parents where we’ve completely missed the mark and failed miserably, but it’s not how many times you fall down, it’s how many times you get back up and try, try again.

Perserverance

This past June 15th I made a resolution to change for the better and get this temple back in shape.
I went out for a one mile run and to be honest it was more of a pathetic job than anything. I am sure it resembled more closely to a bison rumbling across the prairies to any outside observer. More than 2 years had passed since making my last real attempt at getting in shape and over the span of that time I had gone through many difficult challenges; especially in the career arena. 2 layoffs and 11 months of unemployment along with my mother being diagnosed with thyroid cancer didn't help my cause of not wanting to do anything except eat and assume a depressed state of mind. My pride had been crushed and my spirit felt like it had no life remaining in it.

Tomorrow was going to be my 36th birthday and I was feeling pretty worthless. Where had the last 4 1/2 years gone? That was the amount of time that had passed since my daughter's 5th birthday and the last time I ran in a competitive race. My body has been a pathetic example of how our temple's are supposed to look like. Mine had more of the look of a condemed building deemed an unsafe structure and awaiting demolition by way of wrecking ball. I was a mess. I had allowed attack after attack to punch holes in my armor and leave me vulnerable to any pending assault. My core had been crushed by a worldly, demonic onslaught called Corporate America. My talents, abilities and efforts were sucked completely out of me and used like a drug. I was given a sentence of death before I ever had life. My outcome had already been determined, it was just a matter of time before the sentencing was completed and I was cutoff at the knees and left beaten and bleeding to fend for myself in this cuthroat economy.

But God has called me for more than what this world has refused to acknowledge. He has called me to be bold and to be strong and courageous. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus and I have been called to be a warrior for Christ; a general in His army. I have been called for things much higher than this world considers acceptable. I have a higher calling and decided to refuse the death sentence I had previously been given. Why? because my Jesus already conquered the gates of hell and took back the keys and we have victory in Him. We win in the end! There is no need to feel complete defeat and lack of purpose. We all have a calling and a purpose. So I made a decision to throw off these grave clothes and put a new coat of armor on. In order to wear this new covering of armor it is going to require more from me. While it is more protective...it is heavier. The Word says in Luke 12:48, "To whom much is given, much is required." In order for me to carry this new annointing and armor I must get myself in shape.

Not only did I need to be in shape physically, but also spiritually. I had become drained and depleted. Something Brother Tommy Burchfield taught us back at Texas Bible Institute was that we needed to "put the Word in us when we don't need it, so it's there when we do need it." I hadn't been putting the word in me during slow times and once the attacks started bombarding me my defenses were weak and vulnerable and I didn't have the time to prepare. But I have a God who loves me and tells me so. He has shown me there is a light at the end of the tunnel and when things look the darkest and we seem to reach the lowest depths He is there with His hand extended to pull us up and give us a way out. He will even pull us up out of that pit and sling us onto His back and carry us to higher ground. And this is exactly what happened to me. He picked me up and carried me to higher ground. He administered first aid to my wounds and gave me a clean bill of health to continue forward, but I had to show I was willing to accept it and live in His victory.

So when I went running that evening before my 36th birthday I wasn't just running to get physically fit, I was running to strengthen my spirit. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and I must keep it in pristene shape and condition. He deserves the best and I have repented for allowing myself to accept less for my King.
So when I am running and training and things seem uphill and hard, I have to remember I am doing it for several reasons and must perservere and not give up. When I am feeling that my day is crazy and is spiraling out of control, that is when it is time to exercise my spirit. I know that I must train daily in the word and prayer in order to have the weapons necessary for this crazy world. I must persevere if I want to be successful. As I have heard throughout my entire life in the athletic world, "No pain...No gain." If you are not willing to give up something, you will never be able to acquire what you really want. If you want a deeper walk with Christ, you have to sacrifice your time and sleep and spend time in prayer, fasting and reading His Word! If you want to stay in shape and keep your temple looking and feeling good, you will have to eat right, sleep better, give up some of your time and work out.

I read this verse this morning and it is very appropriate and I think will become one of the ones I use to motivate myself daily in my race as a Christian.
Remember the words in Hebrews 12:1 "...let us run with perserverance the race marked out for us."
and in
1 Cor. 9:24-27 "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqqualified for the prize." that I plan on keeping.

Temper, Temper

I am one who does not always outwardly express the loss of my temper; although it does happen. More often than not, I tend to keep my temper tantrums in check, but when I blow my top and my blood pressure rises and the skin color of my forehead turns red it is often difficult to hide and I must run to the place where I can find my temper and regain my composure.

That place would be in my car, where I can play a soothing CD of instrumental worship on and just cry out to my Heavenly Father and ask for his peace to cover me and take any anger built up inside of me away.

A little taste of heaven

The aroma released from the freshly ground coffee beans captivates the entire house as the addictive brew begins to perk. I manage to stumble into the kitchen and deshelve the largest mug I can find.
I fill my mug ever so carefully with the steaming delight and slowly stir in a perfect blend of White Chocolate Mocha creamer. Once the beverage has received the proper preparation, it is time for some serious indulgence.

Clue

Slowly I trudged down the sidewalk and up the steps to enter my haven. Tired from a long day’s work and what seemed an even longer commute home, I couldn’t unlock the door fast enough and proceed to the couch for a quiet evening without the family being home. The moment I stepped across the threshold, a chocolate-laced aroma that infiltrated the entire living space grabbed my attention. I immediately made like a bloodhound to the kitchen to investigate the enticing temptation. As I anxiously approached the kitchen, my mind filled with the desire to sinfully indulge in some chocolate chip cookies and cold milk. When I stepped around the corner expecting to find the desire of my lust, my excitement turned to dismay. There was nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a single morsel in sight, or so I thought. Exhaling in disappointment I prepared for my retreat to the couch, when it caught my eye. A single crumb lay innocently on the tablecloth. It may not have been much, but this clue was the evidence needed for me to launch my investigation.

Grandma's Fried Chicken

I have always enjoyed and will always remember my Grandma Gilbert's home cooked meals. She would fix a meal fit for a king and was willing to fix it anytime I requested it. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, creamstyle corn, fresh rolls, freshly cut cantaloupe and my choice of ice cold chocolate milk or freshly brewed sun tea. And to top it off, she would have a wonderful dessert; usually a cherry or peach cobbler prepared that would sooth the savage beast. Thinking of this always puts a smile on my face. Thanks grandma!

Give Me Your Eyes

Open my eyes, that I may see

glimpses of truth thou hast for me;
place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!

Verse 1 from the music and text written by Clara H. Scott, 1841-1897

This classic hymn is one I sang countless times in the Methodist Church in Liberal, Kansas where I first recall being part of a church home. Of course due to my father’s job, we relocated to several different areas in the Midwest and thus I became part of several different church families and this hymn was one that was often sang in those places of worship as well. In many of today’s church settings we have traded classic hymns for the newest and freshest sounds of worship. May we never forget the truth of the hymns that were written as intercessions of prayer to the creator of the Universe.

These lyrics have a very deep meaning and they will greatly impact you if you allow it to soak into your spirit and begin to meditate on what it is saying. It is my desire to simplify it in to more layman’s terms. It is a prayer, much like those that David prayed to God and should be considered as such. We should pray that our spiritual eyes be opened and see past our physical world and look at the things of God differently. We should pray for God to open our spiritual eyes so that we can be set free from having our eyes fixed on something that is not of God. We should pray that we would see how Jesus sees and go beyond what our physical eyes capture: pride, prejudice, judgement, lust.

Psalm 101:3 “I will set no base or wicked thing before my eyes. I hate the work of them who turn aside [from the right path]; it shall not grasp hold of me.”

Psalm 27:8 “You have said, Seek My face [inquire for and require My presence as your vital need]. My heart says to You, Your face (Your presence), Lord, will I seek, inquire for, and require [of necessity and on the authority of Your Word].”

Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things, fenced in and hidden, which you do not know (do not distinguish and recognize, have knowledge of and understand).”

This hymn came to my mind when my I learned my 9 year old daughter, Alexis, was going to have to have glasses. It didn’t really soak in until she actually went to get them and began wearing them. It reminded me of when I first had to get glasses and I still remember that day vividly. We had gone to pick them out and once I had them and walked out of the eye store, my eyes literally were opened! We went to Sam’s Wholesale that evening and I was in amazement as to the things I could see and how big it was. I recall hearing my parents comment on how my eyes had been opened to a whole new world.

When my daughter received her glasses this past week, she had an experience much like mine. She kept taking them off and putting them on in amazement of what she could now see. One comment she made was that all the trees along the ridge-row at church used to seem clumped together for her, but now she can see all the details of the leaves and branches. I not only want her physical eyes to be opened to the things around her, but it is my intercession and prayer that her spiritual eyes will be awakened as well. I pray that the Lord will reveal things to her through the Holy Spirit and she will see things He wants her to see. One of my favorite contemporary Christian songs by Brandon Heath called “Open My Eyes” is very powerful and should be our prayer to be the eyes of our Lord and Savior. We should never be satisfied with what we have seen and what we currently see. We need to desire for more of Him and that He will reveal things to us that will change our lives and those around us.

The Ultimate Way to Save Money: Reuse

I know it has been a while since I last blogged and there is no excuse except to say life has been quite busy and hectic. This tends to happen when you get a new job and are trying to get back into the flow of working and commuting daily. The following post is my most recent article that will be released in the June edition of the Shawnee Outlook. I look forward to writing more over this summer. In the meantime between my postings, enjoy!

The Ultimate Way to Save Money: Reuse

By Anthony L. Gilbert

What are the hottest ways to reuse and save money? People everywhere are hitting places such as local consignment stores, craigslist and freecycle, but there’s a more creative movement sweeping the nation using everyday household items such as jars, cardboard, berry containers and even lint. With the rising cost of fuel and goods, creative solutions for reusing what we have is all the rage as it alleviates the strain on bank accounts and the environment.

Fresh strawberries are always a treat but when they are all gone it doesn’t mean the fun has to end there. It’s real easy to toss an empty container and forget about it, but in reality, our environment doesn’t forget. So how can these containers avoid seeing a landfill? Their clear plastic and secure lids makes them great for household storage. They can be reused to hold fresh fruit again, and can hold everything from screws, nails, batteries and small tools in the garage to crayons, stickers, markers and glue sticks for children’s art projects. Why not consider decorating some of them with glitter and puff paint and use to package a small gift for a special occasion?

What child doesn’t like to play in a cardboard box and let their imaginations run wild? They’re great for letting children decorate and personalize as a playhouse or fort. They’re great to reuse for sending gifts and packages and can be used multiple times. Get some colorful fabric or material and some hot glue and these plain boxes can be transformed into attractive storage containers. With different sizes to choose from they can be used to store books, magazines, DVDs, craft materials, off-season clothing or any other household item. Another great way to reuse cardboard is through composting. Cardboard decomposes, a very beneficial asset to garden soil. Just make sure you take any tape, plastic or staples out before adding it to a compost pile.

To some that menacing fuzz comes from a dryer trap appears worthless, but it's not. Dryer lint can’t be recycled so it's best for the environment if reused. It’s a valuable resource to have when starting a fire on a cold night. Take some dryer lint with a little bit of paper under the logs and with a strike of a match there will be a nice burning flame in no time. It isn’t a bad option to keep a small bag of it tucked away in the trunk of a vehicle along with a box of matches for emergency purposes. Just keep it in a small box or plastic baggy near the dryer until ready for reuse.

There is an endless supply of plastic bottles and containers in our environment but also countless ways to reuse them. Water bottles, pop bottles, milk jugs, juice bottles, sour cream and yogurt containers all can be reused with some creativity and flair. Peel off any labeling, wash in warm soapy water and they’re ready for reuse. For bottles it’s best to cut off the tops, for containers just discard the lid. A well cut plastic bottle or container can be used to hold countless office supplies, screws, bolts and even toothbrushes and toothpaste. Add some fabric, tempera paint for personality and these items will not only help with organizing, but will allow the opportunity to recreate and try new things rather than having to buy a new organizer when you want a change.

Whether you're turning old mason jars into storage containers for old screws, transforming an old door into a beautiful headboard or restocking a child’s wardrobe, the number of options available for recycling and reusing appear endless. These have only been a few of the ideas from a countless number of resources available through the Internet, public library, and friends. Expose yourself to these ideas and allow creativity to flow. You'll discover items that normally would be thrown away, neglected or no longer wanted will be resurrected and spare you expense and our ever flowing landfills.

April 19, 1995

Where were you on April 19, 1995?

On April 19, 1995 at 9:02 am, the lives of 168 innocent men, women and children were inhumanely taken from this Earth by the gutless acts of pure hate and terror; not to mention the more than 600 others injured and scores tramatized by these events.

On this day I was at work as a 19 year old in Marion, Kansas. I was employed by Marion Hometown Foods. I learned of the events of this tragedy over my lunch break and was forever changed. A few days before the events transpired in Oklahoma City, the Ryder truck used in the bombing was parked in our parking lot. Terry Nichols purchased some oranges and sent a fax from our fax machine. He was a frequent customer of our grocery store and worked as a farm hand at a rural Marion farm. Terry Nichols lived in Herington, Kansas a mere 28 miles from Marion. He seemed like a typical resident in rural Kansas; quiet and somewhat reclusive.

Seeing that Ryder truck parked in our parking lot didn't really concern me at the time, but it did seem a bit odd for it to be parked there. How many moving trucks have you seen parked in grocery store parking lots in small rural towns? I would have to say the number would probably be very minimal. While it wasn't completely strange, it did leave an imprint in my mind. And as the events unfolded over the next several days I soon realized that I had been in the presence of pure evil and blessed that my life was protected.

On October 3, 1994 the Martin Marietta Rock Quarry north of Marion was burglarized. A drill and drill bits found in Terry Nichols' home were matched to the markings on locks at the Quarry. Taken from the Quarry were 229 sticks of tovex sausage explosive, 93 rolls of Primadet, non-electric blasting caps, and 544 electric blasting caps. No ammonium nitrate was taken. Five rolls of Primadet, non-electric blasting caps were found in Terry Nichols' home, and three more were found in Michael Fortier's home. After this occured my grandfather and dad had a discussion and felt like someone was going to cause a lot of harm somewhere. And who would have thought 6 months later this horrible incident would occur in Oklahoma City.

Things were really put into perspective when two FBI agents arrived at our grocery store later that week to interview the management at our store. That is quite nerve racking to know the FBI shows up in your small town grocery store looking like Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones from Men in Black.
This tragedy has affected so many lives and there are so many friends and aquaintances of mine that have been forever changed and to hear their stories is unbelievable. And to think that while this tragedy happened in Oklahoma, the plotting and design of this terrorist act took place less than 30 miles from where I lived and left an imprint in my mind forever.

May we never take for granted our freedoms and the life that God has given us. And may we never forget that there is a great evil known as Satan who goes around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. If you have ever doubted that there is a Satan and a hell, then reflect on this tragedy and 9-11 and may your eyes be opened.

6 Word Saturday

"Started A New Job This Week"

I started a new job this past week and thus have been extremely tired and have not felt like posting lately. The training of my job has not been horrible, but the fact of the matter is when you sit and watch someone do their job this can be very boring and draining. Not only did I start a new job, but this job requires me to commute an hour one way and therefore not only does my day consist of working 8 hours, but also driving a minimum of 2 hours. So to be completely honest with you, I have been extremely tired in the evenings and haven't spent much time on the computer. I promise to write more in the days and weeks ahead, but I have definitely a break from the norm.

I started a contract position with Hertz Corporation and will be doing something I have never done before. The majority of my job will consist of working within the Quality Assurance department. I will be spending most of my time testing scripts, debugging scripts and writing test cases. Hertz is launching a new computer application within their organization regarding the rental process and my job is to assist and ensure that this system is bug free and works as it is designed to do. I know it may sound boring and technically there is a lot of redundancy involved, but I am blessed to have a job and the ability to provide for my family. I am looking forward to the knowledge and skills that I will learn while doing this particular job.

I am hoping to write at least 2-3 posts this next week, so stay tuned and see how things play out on my end. May you have a blessed weekend and week ahead. Remember this next week is very important. It is Easter week. It is not a week to focus on chocolate bunnies and hunting plastic eggs, it is the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ took a beating that would kill most men and took upon himself all sin, sickness, disease so that we may have life and have it more abundantly. I am eternally grateful for the sacrifice He made for me. I am not against chocolate bunnies and egg hunts and think it is a wonderful opportunity for families to bond and spend time together. I definitely intend to have my fill of candy, but will not forget the sacrifice made and will be celebrating the life I have in Him.

Blessings!

Six Word Saturday

Nothing Like Trying Out Something New.

Well I am going to try something new. It is called Six Word Saturday. Describing my activities for the day in exactly six words. Well at least the title will be six words. :) This week my 6 words is exactly what my title says, nothing like trying out something new. Read on to discover the new activity that I embarked upon today.

Today was one of the Saturday's that you don't really want to do anything. It was very warm outside and the wife with my oldest was out finding treasures while at garage sales. I was in the cool of the indoors watching Toy Story 3 on Netflix with my 4 year old son while the youngest slept. We ended up eating some chicken nuggets and chicken strips while dipping them in Buffalo Wild Wings signature sauces. My favorite is Mango Habanero. It has burn, but follows with a burst of sweetness.

Later in the afternoon we decided to drive over to Norman, home of the Sooners and check out the

We have always talked about going, but have never gone before. For someone that wants to do a lot of remodeling or projects, this is definitely the place to go. The prices are very reasonable and it supports a great organization that builds homes for those who are in need of a home and shares the message of God's love. http://www.habitat.org

The only purchase we made today was two cans of spray paint, but at $1.99 a can, you can't beat the price. That is even cheaper than the spray paint on sale for $2.99 @ K-Mart.

We will definitely make a trip back soon. I now know where to go for project supplies. We soon headed back home; sleepy from the heat. Me and my mighty Micah man made a detour to to purchase some key ingredients for our dinner. My wife then prepared a wonderful pasta meal with bread and salad. It was so good, I couldn't help but enjoy a second helping.

It was nice to get out and spend some time with the family today even if it was a quick trip over and back. I hope the rest of your weekend is one full of rest and relaxation. Enjoy the time with your family and we will see you soon!

Happy 31st

the siblings. Ashley, Austin and I.
April 5, 1980 This is a day that will forever have a special place in my life. This was the day that my one and only sister was born in Ulysses, Kansas. While I don't remember much when she was born since I was only 5, I do remember peeking into mom's hospital room from an outside window with my aunt Debbie. For some reason we were not allowed in the room at that particular time.                                                                        Over the years she has been through many different trials and tests and has weathered some major storms in her young life, but I have seen the Lord work through her in mighty ways and provide her supernatural strength and comfort. She is truly a blessing to all of those who are blessed and priviledged to have her in their life.

She is definitely a blessing in my life. If I were to describe her in 5 words they would be: Creative, Beautiful, Sincere, Humorous and Modest. I love my sister very much and am very proud of the woman she has become. Not to mention, she is the mother of my only niece.

the sisters - Ashley, Michele, Maryna

She is a wonderful momma who works hard to support her little butterfly and is training her up in the ways of the Lord. It brings a smile to my face to see the fun and creative things the Lord allows her to share with others.

I am not only proud, but am honored to be called her brother. I love you Ashley! Happy 31st Birthday. May the Lord bless you with many, many more.

Do unto others

This afternoon I took my two oldest children to the public library to check out some books and movies. They always enjoy doing this and I definitely want to do something with them that they enjoy doing. I feel it is very important to spend quality time with the blessings I have been entrusted with. Even though I have failed countless times in this area; I am doing my best to make changes for the better.

As we were leaving the library, I noticed a homeless man sitting in the foyer area eating a bag of chips. I have seen him multiple times around town digging through garbage cans looking for food. Today he looked healthier than he had looked in a long time and a lot of that I feel is through a contribution from a local ministry, Shawnee Rescue Mission and the local Salvation Army, that are providing food and shelter for the homeless and needy.

Many of us pass by the homeless and needy every day and do not do anything about it. Why is this? There are many who sit on the corners of America with signs asking for help or stating they are in need of something. The travesty in this whole matter is that many of these panhandlers are taking advantage of the generosity and hospitality of others when they truly do not need help. There are many of these indviduals whom I see regularly and even have their dog with them asking for help. My first thought is that if they are in need or homeless they do not need a dog or pet to care for. I understand the need for companionship, but in all seriousness, why do I want to help someone out that is trying to care for themselves and their dog?

There have been numerous times I have offered to buy gas and food for those who appear to be in need or have approached me in the parking lot of a local store and when they realize I am not going to give them cash they are not interested and refuse my hospitality. It saddens me that there are those who will refuse hospitality; however, I have been called to share the love of Christ and cannot get upset if they refuse what I have to offer. The best thing I can do is to pray for these individuals and ask God to touch their hearts.

When my children and I passed the homeless man on our way back to the car, I let them know that the man was homeless and that we had a bag of food in our car for this exact scenario. My daughter quickly told me that she wanted to give it to him and then my son chimed in and argued with her saying he wanted to give it to him. Both of my children wanted to help the man and give him the food we had to offer. As we approached the man, my daughter handed him the sack of food and he mumbled something to us. At the same time of our donation to him, another individual had just purchased him a soft drink and was dropping it off for him.

As I walked hand in hand with my children back to the car, I praised them and told them how proud I was of them for doing something so kind. I explained to them the importance of doing nice things for people that are in need and to never be ashamed to show God's love in different ways. While driving home I asked them how did it make them feel and they said it felt good. My daughter then proceeded to inform me that as she handed the food to the man that she saw him as God and that we had just fed God. Hearing this made me smile on the inside.

In Romans Chapter 12 and verse 8 it states, "If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly." My daughter is definitely growing up and is showing the calling that God has placed upon her life and I find no accident in the name we chose for her at birth. Alexis means 'Helper of Mankind' and this definitely describes my daughter and the love she shows towards everyone.

Blessings to you!

Living on Tulsa Time

This past weekend, the family and I journeyed up the Turner Turnpike to Tulsa. It was a whirlwind trip, but one that was definitely long in the works. Michele's brother and his wife had their first baby in February and due to sickness and work schedules it took us a while, but it finally worked out where we could go and see them and have a family getaway.

The weather from the previous week had been pretty comfortable and so when we awoke in the morning we were disappointed that the forecast called for highs in the 50s. So much for the idea of enjoying the warm weather and sunshine on our roadtrip. We loaded up in our Toyota and headed to McDonalds to get some fuel for our stomach's and then it was on to Shell for some 89 octane for the car. Tulsa is normally a hop, skip an a jump up the Turnpike from home, but the fog and mist gave it less drive appeal.

We arrived in a safe and timely fashion at Michele's brothers home in Tulsa. The family was excited to get to meet Evan our newest nephew and cousin. After holding him and  taking some pictures our brief visit was over. They quickly became bored with the scenery and for those with small, energetic children you understand what I mean. They were quarantined to the living room and forbidden to touch anything. While I understand there is a time for my children to behave themselves and have respect for my extended family and their house rules, it is only in their nature they want to explore and play and as adults we need to embrace this desire and allow them to be children and play.

We soon said our good-byes and were off again in our car headed off towards Woodland Hills mall for some shopping. With it being a Saturday and at the mall was a recipe for chaos and frustration. Our destination was to Children's Place to purchase some items with a giftcard Micah had received for his birthday last month. Since the store aisles were very narrow and not kid friendly, the peanuts and I ventured over to the Fossil store.

My previous experience with a Fossil store came within the Mall of America two years ago where I purchased my first Fossil watch. I will admit that I was disappointed when arriving at the Fossil store in this mall. When we walked through the threshold of the store we were greeted by racks and walls of clothing items. While I had previous knowledge of the Fossil clothing line, I did not realize they had changed their entire business structure. They did have a selection of watches in the back of the store, but definitely not the layout I had experienced in Minneapolis.

After letting the kids look at the different types of watches, I tucked my tail between my legs in disappointment and led the kids back to our origin where Michele was just checking out. It was a unanimous decision to leave the mall and go eat. After going against the flow of 71st and Memorial traffic we arrived at On The Border for some great mexican food. It was at this particular location where I had last worked as a server in college many moons ago. As we enjoyed a nice meal consisting of fajitas for the wife and I and enchiladas for the kids I began to daydream of days gone by when I was on the other side of the table serving the meals. Funny how history comes in cycles as I am once again serving meals, but in a more contemporary environment.

After our delicious meal we headed towards Justice to allow my daughter to purchase some items with her gift card and then it was on to Target for some more shopping. Can you see a trend developing? Our family loves to shop. :)
Once all of our shopping was completed we made one last pit-stop to QuickTrip to get some refreshments for the trip home and then it was back on the road home for us. While these trips generally leave us tired and ready for bed; they are definitely worth it and create some great memories.

Have a blessed week ahead!

Dive Right In

As published in the March 2011 edition of the Shawnee Outlook: dive RIGHT IN - by Anthony L. Gilbert

did you know while many pastimes are diminishing, scuba diving is becoming one of the most popular outdoor recreational activities in America? Maybe that's because it isn't as expensive or as difficult as previously thought. No longer a "men" only technical sport, more families are enjoying scuba diving in tropical locations during the warmer seasons and across Oklahoma lakes.

Many feel that scuba diving is too costly, too difficult or entirely too dangerous. Local couples, David and Becki Powell and Larry and Shayla Menhusen were under the same impression several years ago before they started diving. Becki Powell, 8th grade Science teacher for Tecumseh Middle School, said, "I always was a little scared about it before going through with it and being under the water. After snorkeling a few times in Cozumel, I became more comfortable and decided to take a resort course in 2008. I really liked it. I decided I wanted to get my certification and passed it in Cozumel last summer."

Both couples wanted to do something fun and challenging that would allow them to travel and make memories. “The most memorable experience I ever had was when Becki completed her first dive and saw her experience everything for the first time,” Powell said. Through Becki’s eyes, her first experience was breath-taking, “Coming up from my first boat dive I looked up to see myself surrounded by jellyfish. The sunlight was reflecting through the water and the jellyfish. It was awesome,” she said.

Even for a sport as exhilarating as scuba diving, there are risks and precautions divers must follow to ensure safe enjoyment. Larry Menhusen, owner of Integrity Electric, Inc and scuba instructor said, “You have to dive within your limitations. Most accidents occur because of human error. The number one rule in scuba diving is to never hold your breath. Another rule all divers must follow is always use the buddy system. Everything can be worked out under the water. Stay calm and don’t freak out.”

Scuba diving, much like any sport or hobby, requires an investment. Most basic certification courses take less than a week and cost approximately $400 and include the basic scuba gear, class materials and instruction. Eric Hopkins, of Blue Water Divers, began an accredited course this past fall for OBU students. Divers can complete up to four certifications and gain valuable experience and skills. He and Menhusen also teach a course open to the public. This is an excellent, affordable opportunity for anyone in the community to become certified.

Once a diver completes their certifications and training, it’s time to explore a whole new world, that few have yet to experience. Over 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water and 99% of that living space is under water. Both couples agreed that Cozumel is one of the best locations for family vacations. Family atmosphere, affordability, accessibility and the fact the 2nd largest coral reef runs through those waters is what makes Cozumel so attractive. “Experience is everything. You develop relationships with those who run the shops and the dives. With all the activities available in Cozumel it creates an awesome family experience you will want to do again,” Larry Menhusen said.

While tropical locations like Thailand, Okinawa, Hawaii, Bahamas and Belize were some of our couples most exotic dives, Lake Elmer Thomas and Tenkiller are amongst their favorites in Oklahoma. Larry Menhusen said, “I prefer warm water over cold water. Having a dry suit allows me to stay warm and dive year round in the Oklahoma lakes. I love diving Tenkiller. There’s so much history in that lake. When they built it they flooded the area. There are old school buildings, bridges, barns and foundations of an old town. There’s a lot of history in this lake. There’s nothing cooler than being under water and imagining what this town was like when it was still around.”

Being certified has allowed Powell and Menhusen some unique opportunities. David volunteers every month at the Jenks Aquarium and helps clean the inside and makes minor repairs. He has the opportunity to share with visitors about the Aquarium and the kind of marine life found inside. Larry promotes a PADI certified program that is known as the Bubble-maker program. It introduces children to the growing sport in a safe, birthday party environment for up to eight children. After the party, scuba gear is placed on each child and allows them to play games and breathe under water. As an added touch, the children have their picture taken while breathing under the water. This gives the children an opportunity to share with their friends and classmates.

If you’re looking for an activity that will take you to new depths and allow the opportunity to make some great memories and great friendships or if you need a hobby to cure the couch potato blues, then scuba diving is definitely for you. It’s a sport enjoyed by novices to well-seasoned veterans; whether you’re exploring the ruins beneath Lake Tenkiller or searching for large marine life in the warm waters of Cozumel, regardless of your experience, each dive is a new adventure.
